Mario Ronconi is Head of “Resilience and Fragility” Unit in the Directorate People and Peace of DG DEVCO (European Commission), implementing the policy orientation for cooperation with countries in situation of fragility or crisis and guidance and tools to manage effectively and coherently major crisis situations, notably in terms of conflict prevention, resilience and peace building approaches.
He started his European Union career as civil servant in 1997 at Eurostat in the position of Team Leader for Sustainable Development Indicators in the Environment Statistics Unit and, successively, he served as Head of Operations Section for Investments/Works under Cross Border Cooperation, Energy, Transport, Agriculture, S&T, Municipal Services at the EU Delegation to Moscow.
In 2006, he was appointed as Head of Sector Central Asia/DPRK, bilateral and regional programmes - and in 2011 as Deputy Head of Unit and Head of Sector for Geo co-ordination Central Asia, Middle East/Gulf, Asia Regional Programmes in DG DEVCO.
From 2015 to 2019, he served as Head of Cooperation and Head of Unit in the EU delegation to Bangladesh, responsible for bilateral development in the second largest MIP in Asia Region 2014-2020, with an overall portfolio of approximately 150 projects.
Before joining the European Commission, Mr Ronconi held positions in the Chamber of Commerce of Milan and Lecco , first as Head of Sector Eastern Europe-CIS-Russia in the External Relations Department and lately as Deputy Secretary General.
Educated in both Italy and Poland, he obtained two master degrees in Political Science (specialization in Macro-Economics policies) and in Economic and Juridical Studies.
