JOZEF MERKX (Dutch), has been working with UNHCR since 1989, performing various functions; Coordinator for the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Erbil (2014-2016), Deputy Representative in Ecuador (2012-2014), Representative in Costa Rica (2006-2011), Desk Officer for Colombia at UNHCR, Geneva (2002-2006), Program Officer in Uganda (1996-1999), Program Officer in Mozambique (1993-1996), Program Officer in Nicaragua (1991-1993), Field Officer in Costa Rica (1989-1991), Emergency Missions in Ankara , Turkey (2011), Haiti, El Salvador (1993).
Mr. Merkx has also served as the Latin American Officer of the Utrecht Humanitarian League, Netherlands (1986-1988), Chief Operating Officer of HealthNet International, Amsterdam Netherlands (2000-2002)
Social Anthropologist, University of Amsterdam with a Masters in Arts (1980-1986), Postgraduate in Development Economics, University of Amsterdam (1986-1987), Guest Professor in the Refugee Studies Program, Oxford University.
On October 20, 2016, he presented credentials as Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Colombia.
