Yap BoumProf Boum is the current Epicentre Representative for Africa, the research arm of Medecins sans Frontières (MSF) and the former Director of the Epicentre Mbarara Research Centre in Uganda. Boum has an Engineering Degree in Quality Management, a Master in Microbiology, a Master in Public Health, and a PhD in Biology. For the last ten years, he has led several research activities of diseases affecting Africa such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV which has generated more than 100 publications. He was recently coordinating the Field activities of the recent Phase III clinical trial of the VSV a candidate vaccine against the Ebola virus disease in Guinea and Democratic Republic of Congo. Prof Boum is currently co-leading the Operational Research Unit of the Ministry of Public Health in Cameroon regarding the COVID-19 response. Professor teaches at the Mbarara University of Sciences and Technology and in several universities in Cameroon and beyond. Together with Epicentre, my aim is to raise a critical mass of young African researchers who will address the health-related challenges faced by Africa. Prof Boum is also an entrepreneur. He has co-founded Kmerpad, a social innovation that produces reusable sanitary pads for women as well as reusable mask in response to the ongoing response to COVID-19. He is also the co-founder of iDocta that provide quality healthcare by relying on technology to connect patients and health professionals.
