AidEx will be taking place in Brussels this year on 17-18th November. In the lead up to the event, we will be running a series of webinar sessions.

The next webinar will be taking place on 29th September 2021. The topic for this webinar is:

The situation at the coast – global studies and new initiatives.

The coastline is where the environmental damage being wrought on land affects the seas and oceans; and where the damage to the seas comes back to haunt those on the land. Coastlines conjure up images of pristine beaches and holidays for some, but for many of the world’s poorest communities they provide essential and sustaining food and resources.

Coastal habitats, such as estuaries, salt marshes, mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass meadows, comprise some of the world's most productive and ecologically significant ecosystems. Yet they are more at risk to pollution, development and mismanagement than anywhere else.

This webinar will explore the relationship between people and the sea at the point at which they meet – the coast. What are the effects of climate change, urbanisation and exploitation at these locations? How best can people who need the sea use it in a way that doesn’t destroy it? And what work is being done, in and with coastal communities, to help sustain and improve coastal health for the wellbeing of many.

Webinar 5

The fifth webinar in the series took place on 20th July at 2pm UK time. The topic for this webinar was: Solutions to the plastic problem - Exploring the role of social enterprises, circular economies and digital technology

There is a compelling global need for far more urgent and robust management of plastic waste. Issues caused by plastic pollution disproportionately impact the Global South, both at a social and environmental level; but solutions are emerging.

This webinar will highlight work being done by a number of organisations looking to create value from this 'resource'. They will examine the key motivations in developing bottom-up approaches, the challenges and issues faced when looking to develop such social enterprises, the considerations when creating a circular plastics economy, the role and potential of digital technology and the wider implications and applications of taking them to scale.

Webinar 4

The fouth webinar in the AidEx webinar series took place on 29th June at 2pm UK time. The topic for this webinar was: Aspects of rural education in less developed communities

Rural education, a global need, is addressed in different ways. The role of education in development is widely understood; but the methods of delivery and challenges of an urban/industrial education system as compared to a rural setting are as varied as the results.

This webinar, by looking at very different approaches to enhancing the opportunities of rural children, will invite discussion and awareness of alternatives in achieving a common goal of opportunities for the rural young.

Webinar 3

The third webinar in the AidEx webinar series took place on 15th June at 1pm UK time. The topic for this webinar was: Demystifying Impact Measurement.

As a recent Harvard Business Review article said, “Reporting is not a proxy for progress. Measurement is often nonstandard, incomplete, imprecise, and misleading”. In this panel organized by Amani Institute, key experts in the social sector will discuss what is really worth measuring and how you can ensure you are evaluating your steps in changing the world correctly while building your social impact career.

Webinar 2

The second webinar in the series was focused on: 'Development and Gender advancement through social enterprises: cross-continental comparisons'.

Social enterprises could form the backbone of the transition from donation-dependent societies to self-supporting societies; a transition all the more urgently necessary in the context of declining aid and donations, in the current Covid-19 reality.

This webinar will compare and contrast the similarities of needs and solutions in different societies, and highlight the impacts achievable by enabling people, particularly women, through sustainable social enterprises.

 webinar 1

The first webinar took place on 27th April. The topic for this webinar was: Aspects of host country impacts from accepting refugees - a Colombian Experience.

Colombia, newly amongst the World's 20 most vulnerable countries (per International Rescue Committee 2021 assessment), after many years of readily absorbing millions of refugees and displaced people from Venezuela, has received scant international recognition or financial support - to the significant disadvantage of its own people, already long-suffering. This webinar will consider the impacts of the continuing crisis upon the lives of the most impacted.
