NRS International - Empowering Refugees Through Fashion and Design

03 Oct 2017

To mark this year’s World Refugee Day on June 20, 2017, together with award-winning social artist, designer and researcher at London College of Fashion, Prof. Helen Storey, NRS International launched the ‘#LoveCoats’ project to empower the TIGER Girls of Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan.

The #LoveCoats concept was created in collaboration with TIGER (These Inspiring Girls Enjoy Reading), and invited TIGER Girls in Za’atari refugee camp to participate in the project. NRS International donated 1,000 meters of UNHCR approved durable thermal blanketing material to Prof. Storey to help make it all possible.

#LoveCoats’ core mission was to empower 1,250 adolescent girls through fashion and design and to help develop their technical skills to make clothes to battle the upcoming winter season. It also served to explore the TIGER Girls’ own identity and ambitions for the future, by helping inspire them to reach their full potential.

Through the project, the design workshops fostered a sustainable creative learning environment for the TIGER Girls, as participants were given the opportunity to enhance their clothing design skills and then pass them on to younger girls.

NRS International’s #LoveCoats project brought colour and excitement to the Syrian refugees in Za’atari, who used admirable ingenuity to source a wide variety of items from the camp to decorate their coats with anything they could get their hands on to make their designs become a reality.

Once the design workshops were completed, a fashion show and catwalk was set up for friends and families of the TIGER Girls to proudly watch the display of their creations. Watch the fashion show here.

NRS International will be showcasing some of the #LoveCoats at AidEx 2017 on 15 and 16 November. To visit their stand, register free to attend here >>
