AidEx is the global humanitarian and development aid event

The Médecins Sans Frontières Field Hospital

AidEx is proud to unveil the Médecins Sans Frontières field hospital which will show a fully equipped operating theatre and recovery room recently used in Haiti. Usually set within dangerous and bleak environments across the globe, you will see first-hand equipment used and conditions these dedicated doctors and staff have to operate under.

In the past years, MSF has been confronted with some major natural disasters (e.g. Haiti earthquake early 2010) which destroyed parts of the health infrastructure and left large populations without any form of specialized medical assistance.

One of the alternative set-ups for a surgical ward in such a difficult context is an inflatable hospital that can be erected in a couple of days without compromising minimal hygienic standards.

During AidEx, MSF will be showing the surgery module of the inflatable hospital. This set-up is the same as MSF would use during medical emergencies and gives the public insight on the working conditions of our medical teams. It contains an equipped operating theatre (including surgical and anaesthetic tools and beds) with a prep room and a recovery unit. Depending on the needs, setting up the hospital can take between 48 hours and 7 days - for a fully equipped module.

Specially adapted cooling and heating systems ensure the patients and surgical teams comfort. Water supply, waste water evacuations and hand washing basins are easy to install. The 100 sqm interior surface can be adapted according the needs and several partitions can be made to ensure a sterile environment.

As a specialized medical NGO, MSF is continuously investing into new developments to face the ever increasing complexity of our interventions.
